Synopsis

A unique collection of poetry, lyrics, and black-and-white photography centered around the hard working rural life of Vermonters. Connecting with local historical perspectives, personal experience, and imagery, Behind This Moon is retrospective, eloquent, and thoughtful storytelling from a mother and son.

Praise

“This mother-and-son collaboration weaves together ballad-style lyrics and poetic meditations with great tenderness. The wisdom of Jeremy’s line from a song about his grandmother, ‘Just hoe the big weeds’ echoes through the whole book. Yes, that is how we get through our lives best: do what we can, when we can. Then, move on down the row.”

—Margaret Hanzimanolis, poet and professor at Foothill-De Anza Community College

______________________

“This is a timeless collection of poems and songs. A wonderful juxtaposition of old and new. From Jeremy’s story-lore ballads to Susan’s whimsical and spiritual haiku, these Vermonters take you back one hundred years to the present and beyond.”

—Paul Miller, musician and songwriter

______________________

“In Behind This Moon, I begin to sing Susan Sander’s poems and recite Jeremy Sicely’s songs. The words of the mother and son blend together into one poem-song of them, their homeland, their adventures, their people and that song is haunting and beautiful.”

—Sean Prentiss, author of Finding Abbey: The Search for Edward Abbey and His Hidden Grave, winner of the 2015 National Outdoor Book Award

______________________

“Behind This Moon is an evocative blend of the wonderful poetry of Susan Sanders and the lyrical songs of her son, Jeremy Sicely. It has been an honor for me to do readings with Susan. And it was a joy to read this mother-and-son collection of verse.”

—Jerry Johnson, author of Up the Creek Without a Saddle and Noah’s Song
